Anand Kapoor, vår medarbeider i Manchar, huser for tiden to kvinnelige studenter i sin lille leilighet, og skriver dette til oss - mars 2009: "Recently we had a campaign on gender sensitization. Our workers wrote the script, practiced and performed a street-play at many villages, market places, and also at Ghodegaon. We are paying more attention to gender problems. With the creation of self-help-groups, women are coming forward for meetings, they are getting vocal about their problems. More girls are taking education in schools, colleges and also vocational training.
At present we have two young girls who are studying in Pune for their Masters degree in Social work. We are supporting them completely. They will soon finish their first year and go for the second year. Two girls are staying with us at Manchar and are studying in Manchar college in class 11th. One girl is taking training in fashion designing at Gonwadi near Ghodegaon, our block centre.
Next year a new person, Bhima Gawari from village Pimpergane, who is finishing his master degree in Social Work this year, will join us in BARNAS VENNER program and take up this program full time. We have just contacted one lady staying just near our office who has agreed to write our reports in English and so we will be able to send them on time. One more women from village Ahupe, Kamal Dharma Asavle will be working with sponsored children from now on. Bhudhaji will continue to work as in charge.
I think we are thinking on the same lines. We have been contemplating a program on health in which the Rotary Club of Pune will be working with us. We will be working with children, lactating mother, pregnant women, and adolescent girls. The program content will be nutrition, information, training, awareness, and using the government machinery. This program is in the pipe line, we had some meetings with the Rotary Club, with our workers and some in the villages. So far we have been working on curative side but now we feel we should work on preventing program. Now government has been made to take up a comprehensive program of rural health and we are trying to get the program for our area.
One more program that we are planning is starting a hostel cum sports academy for our school children from Aghane. We feel that our school children should not be just left out after they pass out 4th std. we are thinking that we should start a hostel at Dimbhe where there is a proper school so that we don’t have to run a school. We will have a hostel and before and after the school hours we will give special training for athletic activities and sports and other things also such as personality development, reading, elocution, etc.
We are paying attention to our balwadi children as well as our school children. One of the boys from our school Pradeep Ghode was operated for his foot a skin-grafting operation was performed on his foot and now his foot has a better shape: |
Still two more operations will have to be done to make it functional. Last month we had a get- together of balwadi children where they had programs , games, competitions and eating together. Recently on 21 Mar’09 we had a sports-day for our school at Aghane where children from four villages participated. Our children also prepared an exhibition which was appreciated by the other children as well as their teachers. This has created a new atmosphere in the educational section of our area and may be the government official may take a note of it. One more very nice thing I would like to tell you is that our Aghane school children prepared a program of a drama, and songs, with the help of their teachers. They went to surrounding villages and presented it for the village people. The performance was so appreciated by the people that the people gave them prizes in cash and the children have collected some four hundred sixty rupees as prize money. The people were so pleased with the performance that they are getting invitations to perform in other villages but as now the children have to study for their exams the teachers decided to stop it for the time being. The money that is gathered will be spent as per the decision of the children and the teachers. We have ordered some play material for our school children-a slide, a see-saw, a small merry-go-round and a jungle-Jim, the material has come to Aghane and it will be fitted soon and I am sure the children will enjoy it very much. The money was donated by a company. The program of mathematics teaching is going on and the resource persons are quite happy about the children’s progress. We also have bought new toys for the balwadi children. We are happy that the Katkari children who used to run away from school as they were very attached to their families but now they not only don’t run home but find school so interesting that they do not want to go home.

Recently 0n 22 Mar’09 we had a program of boat-racing where the men, the women, couples, and the children-girls and boys participated and enjoyed it. Our tribal fisherwomen went for an ornamental fish training program at Central Instritute of Fisheries Education, which has been helping us with the fisheries activity for the past 3 years. You could see their photos on the CIFE website ( http://www.cife.edu.in/ ) . The woman who was burnt and underwent surgery for it recently, Bhima Tarade, also participated in this program. They first had 2 awareness programs and then they had this training program. Now they want to start this business. They have constructed small tanks where they would grow these ornamental fish. They made bricks by themselves with the help of men and constructed the tanks also bought some bricks and struggled to start the activity."
Best wishes
